On Wednesday October 28th 2015 Dr Mike Curran (Associate Professor of podiatry at The University of Northampton) and Charles Denton (Managing Director of DB Shoes Ltd, Rushden) attended an event at the Houses of Parliament called Politically Correct Footwear hosted by Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman Minister for Life Sciences. Dr Curran was invited to the event as he chairs a consortium of footwear companies and foot health professionals called the Healthy Footwear Guide.
The guide includes well known footwear companies such as Clarks, Cosyfeets, DB Shoes Ltd, Hotters, Padders and suppliers and fitters of footwear such as Canonbury products and Shoe Med. These companies have a range of shoes that are classed as healthy fitting footwear and follow the criteria laid down by the Health Fitting Footwear Guide. Mr Denton is on the committee of the Healthy Footwear Guide and has a close association with the Society of Shoe fitters who organised the event.
Dr Curran explained the event was organised to lobby politicians for official recognition of the role footwear has in the health of an individual and for government health warnings for accurate fit of children’s shoes. Dr Curran and Mr Denton were delighted that the Society of Shoefitters received over 30MP's into the room over the course of the event something of a record in lobbying MPs on health related issues.
